Restorative Dentistry:
This would include fillings and crowns. This involves removing any damaged, fractured or decayed areas of the tooth and rebuilding using the correct contour of the original tooth to ensure maximum comfort. Teeth that are heavily broken may require crowns using various materials most suitable for you.
Gum disease/Periodontology:
Early detection is very crucial, but even advanced gum disease can be arrested with regular maintenance. At every examination, we check for gum disease to identify any pockets which may require further treatment.
Infections/Abscess:
If decay is not treated the tooth can get infected. If you notice you have a "gum boil" or swelling, you will need to be seen as soon as possible. A course of antibiotics may be given to fight the infection but it will not treat the pain, so it is also recommended to take a pain killer that is suitable for you.
NHS Dental Treatments
It is very important to keep on top of your oral hygiene and attend regular check ups every 6 - 12 months to maintain optimum levels of hygiene. This helps to prevent any further problems and keep your natural teeth in good shape and spot any problems.
Please see a break down of treatments below.
Examinations:
Each dental examination is broken down into three parts; firstly detecting any decay or broken teeth; secondly detecting gum disease using specialist probes and thirdly, a soft tissue check to detect oral cancers and other soft tissue diseases.
Dentures
It is important to replace missing teeth, so that the pressure around your mouth is evenly distributed when eating. With missing teeth you may notice that it is uncomfortable to chew. Dentures are a removable appliance that helps to avoid further fractures and wear on remaining teeth. There are several different materials available for dentures and your dentist will advise you on which is suitable for you.
If you are not keen on a removable appliance and wish to consider an option that will be more natural in appearance, a
Dental Implant may be for you,
this is not available on the NHS.
